ABUJA — The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has officially declared today, Friday, February 20, a work-free day for all public servants within the territory. The directive, issued by the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, is intended to facilitate the seamless movement of residents to their respective registration areas ahead of the Area Council elections scheduled for Saturday, February 21.
The elections will take place across the six Area Councils: Abuja Municipal (AMAC), Abaji, Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje, and Kwali. A total of 68 constituencies will be contested, with voters set to elect six chairmen and 62 councilors.
INEC Readiness and Logistics
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that all sensitive materials have been successfully deployed to the various council headquarters. The commission’s FCT Resident Electoral Commissioner, Joash Amupitan, stated during a final press briefing that over 3,300 Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines have been tested and configured for the exercise.
"We have achieved a 94% PVC collection rate in the FCT, which is one of the highest in recent history," Amupitan noted. He reiterated that the "No PVC, No Voting" rule will be strictly enforced and that the results will be uploaded in real-time to the IReV portal, as mandated by the Electoral Act 2026.

Political analysts describe this weekend’s polls as a critical "litmus test" for the 2027 general elections. To ensure a peaceful voting process, the FCT Police Command has announced a total restriction of vehicular movement across the territory from 12:00 midnight on Friday until 6:00 PM on Saturday.
