The Coalition for Goodluck Jonathan 2027 has identified former President Goodluck Jonathan as the most qualified candidate capable of tackling Nigeria’s economic and security challenges, confirming plans to support his return to national leadership ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The group made this known during an international press conference held in Abuja on Wednesday, where its president, Tom Ohikere, said the coalition is already mobilising support across the country and among Nigerians in the diaspora to position Jonathan for the 2027 race.
Ohikere explained that the coalition serves as a coordinating platform bringing together various support groups with a shared mission of restoring stability, rebuilding economic confidence, and encouraging responsible governance in Nigeria.
He said the nation is currently battling worsening economic conditions and rising insecurity, including inflation, unemployment, currency instability, and increased hardship for citizens, which have weakened public trust in government.
According to him, the challenges facing Nigeria demand a leader with proven experience and a deep understanding of governance, stressing that Jonathan’s background in public service places him in a strong position to lead again.
“Jonathan remains one of the few Nigerians with comprehensive experience in governance and a proven record of national leadership,” Ohikere stated.
The coalition further pledged its commitment to strengthening democratic institutions, promoting credible elections, and upholding the rule of law, noting that restoring confidence in governance remains critical.
It also called for inclusive governance that reflects Nigeria’s diversity, promotes unity, and reduces political tension across regions.
Referencing Jonathan’s tenure as president, the group said his administration upheld democratic principles, ensured institutional stability, and pursued economic reforms. It added that recommendations from the 2014 National Conference remain relevant to ongoing discussions on national restructuring.
The coalition also criticised recent remarks by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar questioning Jonathan’s experience, describing the comments as misleading and inconsistent with the former president’s record in public service.
Ohikere noted that Jonathan’s peaceful handover of power in 2015 remains one of Nigeria’s most significant democratic milestones and evidence of his commitment to constitutional order.
He added that consultations have begun with key stakeholders and political groups nationwide, with plans to intensify grassroots mobilisation and advocacy as the 2027 general elections draw closer.
The coalition urged Nigerians to reflect on leadership choices and make decisions that will shape the country’s future.
“Support for Goodluck Jonathan represents a step toward restoring confidence, stability, and direction in Nigeria,” Ohikere concluded.
