The family of slain Oyo schoolteacher, Michael Olugbade Oyedokun, has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde to urgently direct security agencies to recover his remains following the rescue of pupils and teachers abducted from Community High School in Oriire Local Government Area.
In an open letter addressed to the President and jointly signed by members of the Oyedokun family, the relatives expressed appreciation to the Federal Government, the Nigerian Armed Forces, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force, and other security agencies for successfully rescuing the surviving victims after nearly two months in captivity.
Despite celebrating the rescue, the family said their pain remains unresolved because Oyedokun’s body has not been found, preventing them from giving him a proper burial.
According to the family, while other rescued victims have reunited with their loved ones, they continue to live with the emotional burden of not knowing where their relative’s remains are.
They described the recovery of Oyedokun’s body as a humanitarian duty, stressing that every Nigerian deserves dignity in death and that returning his remains would allow the family to perform final burial rites in line with their faith and traditions.
The family urged President Tinubu and Governor Makinde to instruct the appropriate security agencies to intensify efforts to locate and recover the late teacher’s remains, expressing confidence that the same determination that secured the victims’ release could also bring closure to their family.
The appeal comes after the principal of Community High School, Mrs. Rachael Alamu, who was among those rescued after spending 57 days in captivity, disclosed that Oyedokun was beheaded by the kidnappers on the second day of the ordeal.
She also revealed that another teacher, Esiyan Adegboye, was shot dead during the initial attack on the school. According to her, the kidnappers killed both teachers in an attempt to pressure the government into meeting their demands.
While Adegboye’s body was recovered and buried in Ogbomoso on May 22, Oyedokun’s remains are yet to be found.
