CAN Warns Nigerians Are Unsafe Everywhere

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed serious concern over the worsening insecurity across the country, warning that Nigerians can no longer feel safe anywhere.

The Chairman of CAN in Niger State, Most Reverend Bulus Yohanna, described the current security situation as frightening, lamenting the increasing cases of violence, kidnappings, and killings.

Yohanna, who is also the Catholic Bishop of Kontagora Diocese, made the remarks during a CAN council meeting held at the association’s state secretariat in Minna.

He identified insecurity, economic hardship, and the failure of political leaders to fulfill their promises as some of the most pressing challenges facing Nigeria.

The cleric also expressed worry over reports that foreign countries are now issuing travel warnings to their citizens, advising them against visiting some parts of Nigeria and even urging them to leave Abuja due to fears of possible attacks.

“Who is safe in Nigeria today, and where can anyone confidently say is secure?” Yohanna asked. “If military generals and senior security officers can be killed, then who cannot be killed?”

He further condemned the rising destruction of communities, farmlands, markets, and homes, noting that attackers often burn and loot agricultural produce, worsening food insecurity and hardship.

Yohanna also referenced a leaked memo allegedly from the Nigeria Customs Service, which reportedly warned of planned attacks on government facilities and military formations, urging citizens to remain alert.

He called on Nigerians to remain security-conscious at all times while also seeking divine intervention for peace and safety in the country.

His remarks come amid increasing fear within the Christian community, especially in northern Nigeria, where repeated attacks on churches and local communities have continued to raise concern.

Recently, the Northern chapter of CAN urged Christians to take proactive steps to secure themselves and their communities, particularly during major religious celebrations such as Easter.

Chairman of Northern CAN, Reverend Joseph Hayab, encouraged Christians to remain vigilant and organised, stressing that attackers should not be viewed as invincible.

Despite the growing insecurity, CAN leaders have urged Christians not to give in to fear but to stay watchful while continuing their religious activities.

Meanwhile, recent attacks in Plateau State and Southern Kaduna have further heightened anxiety, with Christian leaders accusing President Bola Tinubu’s administration of failing to effectively protect lives and property.

ADC Suspends Atiku Abubakar Over Alleged Anti-Party Activities in Adamawa

The Adamawa State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has announced the suspension of former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar (GCFR), from the party for a period of three months over alleged actions deemed detrimental to the unity of the party.

In a letter dated April 13, 2026, and signed by the State Secretary, Zubairu Mohammed Ishaq, on behalf of the State Working Committee (SWC), the party stated that the suspension takes immediate effect from April 13, 2026, and will run until June 12, 2026.

According to the letter, the decision followed a resolution reached by the SWC and was communicated during a press conference held the same day. The party accused Atiku of contributing to internal disunity and facilitating the emergence of parallel party structures in Adamawa State, actions which it claims undermine existing court orders.

The ADC leadership in the state referenced three ongoing court cases—one at the Court of Appeal and two at High Courts within Adamawa State—which reportedly restrain the party from conducting congresses in the state pending the determination of the suits. The letter emphasized that any attempt to organize congresses or create alternative leadership structures violates these subsisting court orders.

As part of the suspension terms, Atiku Abubakar has been barred from participating in party activities, meetings, and functions throughout the duration of the suspension. He is also prohibited from representing or acting on behalf of the party in any capacity and warned against taking further actions that could undermine the unity and integrity of the ADC in Adamawa State.

In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, Edochie strongly criticised those who condemn South-East supporters of the president, describing them as “monkeys and cowards.”

“Any Igbo man that is dragging his fellow Igbo man for supporting President Tinubu, that person is a monkey and a coward,” he wrote.

Edochie argued that many of those who criticise Tinubu supporters in the South-East often fail to apply the same energy when it comes to people from other regions who openly support the president.

He challenged such critics to show evidence of them confronting Tinubu supporters from the South-West and Northern Nigeria.

“Show me a video of you dragging Yorubas who are supporting Tinubu. Show me a video of you dragging Northerners who are supporting Tinubu. Show me a video of you dragging all the past leaders who couldn’t fix Nigeria. Show me a video of you dragging Northern celebrities that support Tinubu. None,” he added.

Meanwhile, reports indicate that President Tinubu’s “City Boy” movement is already gaining momentum across the country, including in the South-East. Influential figures such as Obi Cubana are said to be playing key roles in mobilising support within the region.

Tinubu Best Friend Nigerian Students, Lecturers Could Ever Have — Reno Omokri

Former presidential aide and political commentator, Reno Omokri, has described President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the best friend Nigerian students and university lecturers could ever have, citing what he called improved stability in the nation’s higher education sector.

Omokri made the statement in a post shared on social media, where he argued that Tinubu’s administration is the only government in Nigeria’s history that has not experienced a prolonged nationwide strike by university lecturers.

According to him, since 1973 when the National Association of University Teachers—later transformed into the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU)—embarked on a national strike, no Nigerian administration has lasted more than one year without facing a nationwide strike action by university lecturers, except the current Tinubu-led government.

He stated that under Tinubu, students can now complete their academic programmes without disruptions, adding that a four-year course is now guaranteed to remain four years.

“As a student, have you experienced nationwide strikes by ASUU in the last three years? Never! You can plan your life under this President,” Omokri said.

He further claimed that lecturers are better paid under the Tinubu administration, while many students are benefiting from the Federal Government’s student loan programme through the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).

Omokri noted that nearly one million students are already benefiting from the interest-free loan scheme, following the signing of the Student Loan Bill into law by President Tinubu on June 12, 2023.

He also attributed Nigeria’s improved ranking in education to increased government investment in the sector, noting that 21 Nigerian universities were listed among the top 54 institutions in the Times Higher Education (THE) Sub-Saharan Africa University Rankings.

The former presidential aide further stated that the Tinubu administration has allocated significant funding to education, ranking it among the top sectors in national budget allocations, aside from defence and security.

He added that the Federal Government has reportedly built more than 20 new schools across the country while also maintaining existing educational institutions.

Omokri insisted that no former Nigerian leader has made similar achievements in the education sector, describing the Tinubu administration’s “Renewed Hope” agenda as a practical reality rather than mere political rhetoric.

He, however, acknowledged that his remarks may attract criticism, but maintained that the achievements he listed cannot be disputed.

“Renewed Hope is not an agenda. It is a tangible and actionable reality for millions of Nigerian students and thousands of university lecturers,” Omokri stated.

President Tinubu’s administration has continued to push reforms in the education sector, including funding initiatives and programmes aimed at improving access to tertiary education and reducing disruptions in academic activities.

The coalition further pledged its commitment to strengthening democratic institutions, promoting credible elections, and upholding the rule of law, noting that restoring confidence in governance remains critical.

It also called for inclusive governance that reflects Nigeria’s diversity, promotes unity, and reduces political tension across regions.

Referencing Jonathan’s tenure as president, the group said his administration upheld democratic principles, ensured institutional stability, and pursued economic reforms. It added that recommendations from the 2014 National Conference remain relevant to ongoing discussions on national restructuring.

The coalition also criticised recent remarks by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar questioning Jonathan’s experience, describing the comments as misleading and inconsistent with the former president’s record in public service.

Ohikere noted that Jonathan’s peaceful handover of power in 2015 remains one of Nigeria’s most significant democratic milestones and evidence of his commitment to constitutional order.

He added that consultations have begun with key stakeholders and political groups nationwide, with plans to intensify grassroots mobilisation and advocacy as the 2027 general elections draw closer.

The coalition urged Nigerians to reflect on leadership choices and make decisions that will shape the country’s future.

Lagos Govt Calls on Banks, Filling Stations, Eateries to Open Toilets for Public Use

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, made the appeal in a statement shared on X on Saturday.

According to Wahab, Lagos currently has 1,710 functional public toilets positioned across different parts of the state for both residents and visitors. However, he stressed that government efforts alone are not enough to meet the sanitation needs of the growing population.

He explained that encouraging private businesses to open their restrooms to the public will help expand access to sanitation facilities and support the state’s drive toward eliminating open defecation.

Wahab also noted that the state is enforcing environmental sanitation laws, adding that individuals caught engaging in open defecation are being arrested and prosecuted.

He described the measures as necessary to protect public health, uphold human dignity, and ensure a cleaner environment for all.

“Access to sanitation is a shared responsibility,” the commissioner stated, calling on residents and businesses to support government initiatives aimed at keeping Lagos clean, safe, and habitable.
